Birds

Watch these as they ho from branch to branch, or along the ground, pecking at barriers or at the ground for worms. Notice how they are able to hang tightly onto branches when the wind blows them around. Watch how differently birds eat their food. For instance, smashing snail shells to get at the soft snail inside, cracking open sea shells to eat the soft interior, pecking at nuts or pulling up worms.
Watch other birds, for example, seagulls or birds of prey, swirling around high in air as they get caught on the thermal air streams. Notice how they simply glide around with wings outstretched, but without any flapping of wings. Compare this essay, graceful movement to gliders, which move in much the same way.
Look at bird books with your child to notice the different sizes of various birds and the different coloring of male and female birds. Points out different beaks which vary according to the type of food the birds eat.
